I just wanted to let everyone know of the sudden and unexpected passing of Thomas S. Whitecloud, III, M.D., The Ray J. Haddad Professor and Chairman of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Tulane University School of Medicine, and Director, Adult Spine Surgery Service, Tulane University Hospital and Clinic. Any of you who knew Tom will recall his wonderful personality and ability to place anyone at ease. Those of you involved in surgery of the spine will immediately recognize the name, as Dr. Whitecloud was the author of numerous articles, chapters, and texts related to surgery of the spine. Members of the AAOS will recall his untiring efforts in teaching courses and helping to bring the Academy to New Orleans. It is said that we stand on the shoulders of giants in Orthopaedic Surgery, fortunately Tom's shoulders are broad and strong. In addition to his strong family and legion of friends, Tom leaves behind nearly 100 residents and fellows, trained under his warm and firm guidance to continue his life's work of truly caring for people. We will miss him greatly but take comfort in the strong Department he helped build, and the wonderful people he surrounded himself with.
