Chapter 2 - Mailing Programs

Chapter 2 Topics

Orthopaedic Mailing Lists

Mailing lists that cater to the needs of orthopaedic surgeons have been in existence since 1995. There has been a good deal of fluidity in the organization of the lists but since 1998 the majority of orthopaedic surgeons who use a mailing list subscribe to one or more of the "Orthopod" family of mailing lists. These include ,

Orthopod

a general list with a wide international readership

Hand

for hand surgeons and therapists

Limb Reconstruction (discontinued in 2003)

for those with a special interest in limb reconstruction

Arthroplasty (discontinued in 2003)

for discussion of joint surgery

Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (discontinued in 2003)

for discussion of orthopaedic aspects of sports medicine

Spine (discontinued in 2003)

for discussion of spine surgery

The Orthopod list is very vigorous with an average of 8.8 messages a day in 1998. The Hand Surgery list is also very popular with weekly case presentations moderated by Charles Eaton. The Sports Medicine list is still active less so than the others. The remaining lists have very little traffic.

The Trauma list at http://www.trauma.org/ is also a very vigorous list but discusses trauma subjects with a much wider focus than orthopaedics.
