Chapter 2 - Mailing Programs

Chapter 2 Topics

What are Mailing Lists?

Mailing lists are Internet communications programs which are used by a group of people with a common interest. The program is set up so that a message sent to the list is sent to all members of the list. This differs from a Newsgroup in that the message is sent privately to you (if you are a member of the list) whereas a message to the newsgroup is posted for anyone who wants to visit that newsgroup to see. Also it is easy to attach image files to an email message and send it to the list. The messages are permanently stored on the recipients' computers until they are deleted. For these reasons email groups have flourished in Orthopaedics while the one time newsgroup sci.med.orthopaedics has failed.

One valuable use for mailing lists is to help communications between orthopaedic surgeons who share a common language and may not follow the English language mailing lists that well. Current examples of such lists are:

  • IndiaOrth mailing list primarily focusing on issues related to Indian orthopedics (English)
  • BeneluxOrth catering primarily to the needs of orthopaedic surgeons in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg
  • Ortopedía (en Castellano)
    • La primera lista de correos en español para cirujanos ortopédicos, rehabilitadores, radiológos, etc. Moderador y propietario de la lista: Dr. J.F. Martinez, Hospital Marina Baixa, Villajoyosa, Alicante, España. (intended as a discussion forum for spanish-speaking orthopaedic surgeons and related specialists)
  • I believe there is a Chinese language mailing list also
  • We would appreciate hearing about any other orthopaedic mailing lists that are active.
