eSafe Protect 2.2 Build 24(10753KB, eSafe Protect is more than antivirus software. It also protects your system from vandals and online threats from the Internet (Java applets, ActiveX controls, plug-ins, and modem dialers). The full product is reviewed in this issue's roundup of security suites, "Defend Against Invaders," and it won our Editors' Choice.

Performance was slightly above average, and eSafe's task-oriented interface shows promise, but the program has problems. Real-time scanning is difficult to disable and the on-demand scanner cannot scan individual files. More important, it missed four macro viruses on our tests, making its virus protection the weakest in this roundup.

Although we found eSafe Protect's interface attractive and engaging, the multiple dialogs are confusing. You can launch the real-time scanner by either selecting the Run eSafe Anti-Virus icon from the eSafe Protect group on the Start menu or clicking on the Protect Watch module desktop icon.

Launching the scanner activates a third, task-oriented dialog, which appears in the main screen where you create tasks. A combo box lists existing tasks and a tabbed dialog lets you select options, including the scheduler. Since you can save tasks for reuse, it's easy to create and save a scan for a folder containing multiple word processing documents, for example.

eSafe lets you scan drive and folder sets on demand but not individual files. You can scan groups of files, however, that you select by file type, and groups of files can be excluded by extension, globally.

The well-organized and detailed help file is one of the best we've seen in this roundup. eSafe also makes excellent use of the Windows 95 What's This? help button and provides lucid explanations.) IBM AntiVirus build 304.073 For Win95(2611KB, PRO: Perfect wild virus detection and repair, good zoo virus detection, nice mix of features, fastest scan time, supports all major operating systems. CON: Updating is too complex, problems removing some macro viruses

You do get a good virus hunter with an easy-to-use interface and a nice variety of options, but the program makes updating so hard that you may find it not worth the time. IBM AntiVirus fares well on the features front. It supports several operating systems: Windows 95, 3.x, and NT, as well as DOS and OS/2. You can set various protection levels, including searching for viruslike activity. You can also set up automatic periodic scans and specify which drives or directories to check.

Like Dr Solomon's, this program comes with a bootable floppy disk that you can use to check any system for viruses. And we like IBM's simple interface: Click the large Push Here button to start a scan.

IBM AntiVirus's powerful neural network technology detected all 271 of the wild viruses and a fairly high 97 percent of zoo viruses in our tests. But it had some trouble repairing wild macro viruses: Unlike all other packages except ThunderByte, it twice deleted both the virus and its macro, rather than leaving the macro intact.

Unlimited virus-signature updates are available free from IBM's Web site, but the program doesn't warn you when it's outdated, as most do. Instead, you must keep checking the site for updates, which are a pain to incorporate: Unlike its competitors, IBM makes you compare your current signature dates to those on the Web site, then copy the new signature file manually.)Click here to download for WinNT  Virus definition:AV30DI, Apr.04.99

Inoculan AntiVirus 5.0b(4MB, PRO: Great interface, extensive scanning options, cheapest package here, near-perfect wild virus detection and repair. CON: Relatively weak zoo virus detection, lots of false positives, slowest scan time, may clash with STB Nitro 3D graphics card.

The program conflicted with the driver for our STB Nitro 3D graphics card (which the company says won't happen when the driver is updated). It also missed more zoo viruses than any program except PC-cillin and erroneously identified six clean files as infected. And when we dosed our PC with the Antiexe.A virus, Inoculan hung and didn't tell us to use a recovery disk, as it should have. Computer Associates says that the problem is specific to Antiexe.

Inoculan's user interface, accessible yet laden with features, explains clearly what's happening. And the default options, such as automatic scanning within all compressed files, are more comprehensive than those of any other package we reviewed.

Beyond that, Inoculan can do different types of scans (such as quick or thorough) and has unparalleled options for including and excluding drives, files, and directories. Also unique is its Danger Watch, which temporarily heightens protection after a virus attack. A quibble: We needed three (rather than one) 1.44MB floppies to create an emergency rescue disk.

Inoculan's scans were the slowest, but the program is thorough: It puts infected files in a quarantine folder and brings up a disinfection wizard.

The company offers one year of free program and virus-signature updates from its Web site.

Despite its glitches, Inoculan AntiVirus's excellent interface and generous options make it a good pick.Virus definition9905 4.21) Home Page

Mcafee Viruscan For Win95/98 4.02 Simpified Chinese version(8.8MB, McAfee VirusScan Central, the integrated control panel, gives you handy access to the program's main tools as well as to hints and tips. It suggests when virus signature files need updating and when the PC needs a full system scan. Automatic, free updates of virus signature files via the Internet are one click away. And these updates are unlimited. (Norton recently restricted the duration of its free updates to one year from purchase.)

VirusScan 4.0 now protects against malicious Web-site based ActiveX and Java applets. You can even lock out specific Web sites.

The program also actively scans e-mail attachments and downloaded files for viruses. If you feel bewildered by all these choices, a wizard can lead you step by step through setup of the basic options.

So, who's "it" for now? If you're a Norton AntiVirus user, there's really no compelling reason to switch. Norton AntiVirus 5.0 For NT Server Final(10.5MB, The most notable improvement from NAV 4.0 involves virus-scanning technology. NAV 4.0's virus scanner set up a virtual computer for safely executing the start of program files, looking specifically for a polymorphic class of viruses. Using a synthesis of search technology obtained from IBM and this virtual-machine idea, NAV 5.0 tries to locate specious virus-like files of any type.

Another notable new feature in NAV 5.0 is Scan and Deliver--the ability to e-mail a safely wrapped virus to Symantec's AntiVirus Lab. What makes this service noteworthy is that in many cases the process is automated, so the response can be quick; in our test, turnaround time was about 30 minutes.

Roughly 4,000 new viruses are identified each year, so you must update the virus-definition files on a regular basis. These files, changed weekly by Symantec, can be downloaded over the Internet. One improvement in the new version allows incremental updates rather than requiring you to download a complete definition file each time.

One way of ensuring that you make frequent updates of virus definitions and frequently scan disks is automatic scheduling of these actions. Under Windows 95 and NT 4.0, Norton Program Scheduler is installed and these tasks are included. Under Windows 98, the more powerful scheduler built into the operating system is used.

One of our tests set the clock forward six months on one of our test systems, to see how NAV would react to an out-of-date virus-definition file. If you look closely enough at the main panel in such a situation, you'll see a small icon and some text indicating that the outdated files should be updated. However, the notification would be easy to miss. We prefer the McAfee approach, which pops up a specific dialog with a button to update the virus definitions immediately.

One glitch we found: About 70 percent of the time, our Windows 98 test system crashed during shutdown after NAV was installed. After you shut down, NAV checks for viruses on your floppy disk drives. NAV then shifts to text mode to display a message that it is doing this and then shifts back. With Windows 98's quick shutdown, this can be a problem. While the problem was harmless, it was annoying enough that we were glad when tech support found a fix involving updating some registry entries. Symantec plans to post a knowledge-base article on the problem sometime next week on its Web site.

There are a lot of nasties out there that threaten anyone who browses the Internet, exchanges e-mail, or uses floppy disks. You can't afford to be without solid virus protection, and NAV 5.0 remains the top of the heap.Another site to download Another site to download) Home Page

Norton AntiVirus 2000 For Windows 9x (14893KB, Norton AntiVirus 2000 provides automatic protection against viruses and other malicious code at all entry points, including e-mail attachments and Internet downloads. The redesigned interface provides users with better explanations of necessary action, reduces system conflicts and allows task-based and fully customised scanning.

Additionally, Norton AntiVirus 2000 is the only anti-virus software to combine security enhancing, state-of-the-art technologies with the easiest-to-use automatic updating feature, LiveUpdate. Norton AntiVirus is also an integral component of Symantec's award-winning Norton SystemWorks 2000 utility suite. Customers can buy Norton AntiVirus immediately at Symantec's recently introduced online store at http://www.symantecstore.com/ as well as other online retailers.

"As the proliferation of malicious code continues to disrupt all activities on the Internet including commerce, communications and applications, Norton AntiVirus 2000's next-generation technologies virtually eliminate this growing risk," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 includes powerful technologies designed specifically to protect consumers while they use the Internet. New to Norton AntiVirus 2000 is support for automatic scanning of incoming e-mail attachments from POP-based applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, Eudora Pro/Lite, Netscape Messenger and Netscape Mail, and more. In addition, Norton AntiVirus 2000 is now able to automatically eliminate viruses in multiple compressed file levels, such as a Zip file inside another Zip file.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 automatically blocks destructive ActiveX code and Java applets from entering a user's computer. In addition, Norton AntiVirus includes its Trojan Horse detection engine to guard users against online programs that might steal passwords or destroy data. Norton AntiVirus 2000 also features Scan and Deliver, which enables users to use the Internet to send suspicious files to SARC for analysis and any needed virus definitions.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 utilises a new graphical user interface for virus alerts and shutdowns, thereby allowing for a better explanation of necessary actions while reducing system conflicts and enabling full use of the mouse. New task-based scanning allows fully customised scanning, easing set-up and use. Norton AntiVirus 2000 is Windows 2000 compatible and Windows 98 tested and compliant.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 introduces LiveAdvisor, personalised support services direct to the desktop via the Internet. With LiveAdvisor, consumers can elect to receive proactive product support, LiveUpdate alerts, user tips and tricks, and upgrade notifications automatically, based on user-defined preferences. Symantec will forward critical service alerts as well as product update information through LiveAdvisor to make sure customers are informed about the latest threats and the software is updated to handle them. In addition, users can benefit from proactive information on the latest features and Symantec's growing library of top usage solutions.
Finally, users can evaluate new product features and third-party reviews as well as purchase and download the latest upgrade right from the product.

The LiveUpdate feature of Norton AntiVirus 2000 provides users an easy, automatic way to keep their anti-virus protection current. With Norton AntiVirus 2000, users receive pop-up message alerts to remind them when their virus definitions become dangerously out-of-date. Also included is a modular engine called NAVEX, which allows Symantec to ship fundamental changes to the virus scanning technology with every virus definition update.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 also includes Symantec's advanced heuristics scanner, Bloodhound, which detects new and unknown viruses. In addition, AutoProtect scans all files that are run, copied, created, or downloaded, thereby providing around-the-clock protection.
